Tropea is situated between the Gulf of St. Euphemia and Gioia Tauro, and is one of the most picturesque centers of important artistic interest in the province of Vibo Valentia. From its very ancient origins, Tropea’s territory retains considerable traces of prehistoric remains, but also examples of Greek and roman influence. Through History, it was occupied by Arabs, Normans and the Aragonese. It was a thriving maritime center that had commercial relations with all the Mediterranean countries. Today it is an exclusive seaside resort, with an efficient marina and fishing port. Tropea boasts one of the best, well preserved and beautiful historical town centers in the region. Considered the real capital of Capo Vaticano, one can admire the Norman cathedral, dating from the eleventh century, and the churches of S. Francis of Assisi and Santa Maria della Neve in the town of Tropea. In addition, one can admire the very impressive church of Santa Maria dell’Isola which lies at the foot of the city, on a small spit of land jutting into the sea. From the viewpoint of the terrace which stands on the oldest urban core of the town, one can enjoy the view of the clear and incredibly azur water, breaking on rugged cliffs, beautiful white beaches and beautiful bays. Walking down the town’s main street and its alleys, one can taste or buy local products in the shops that are always ready to welcome you. The summer attractions are many and always ready to satisfy every tourist.
